Tanner Daniels was selected as the #1 overall draft pick for the 2017-2018 Wooster Oilers in this years NA3HL Draft. He was not only the #1 draft pick, but he was the only player the Oilers drafted for the 2017-2018 season. The 5’8″, 150lbs phenom forward is from Edinboro, PA. Daniels, 15, played the previous season with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite AAA. Daniels spoke about how it felt to be the #1 draft pick when he said, “It is a real honor to be Wooster’s only draft pick. It is awesome to know that all of the time and money my family and I have put into hockey is starting to pay off. Since I started playing hockey, I have always wanted to play juniors and now it’s happening. Being drafted in the first round is a dream come true”. Daniels put up some good numbers for the Pens this previous season with 18 goals and 33 assists. When asked about his thoughts on him being the only 2001 birth year player to go in the first round, Daniels said, “Being the only 2001 to be drafted in the first round is also an amazing feeling because it gives me confidence in my play and the urge to get stronger and better. It is great to know that I was the youngest to be drafted in the first round”. Daniels also spoke little about being drafted by a program like Wooster when he said, “Being drafted by Wooster allows me to know I will be able to play on a team and program that focuses more on player development than winning a championship. I also like how the coaches are easy to talk to and easy to get along with”. Daniels has a positive outlook on any time he would spend in Wooster as he mentioned the positives within the Wooster program since former alumni Jeffrey Skinner, recently advanced to the USHL. Daniels had this to say, “I’d like to congratulate him because it is not easy to make it there. By this happening, it shows that there are options and opportunities to get to the next level. It also proves that the coaches are willing and able to get you to the next level”. Tanner Daniels has a very bright future ahead of him.
“Tanner is a great kid and a great player. He is a gifted hockey player with his best years ahead of him. It was an easy decision for us when it came to drafting Tanner as our #1 pick as well as him being our only draft pick this year. Having a player like Tanner in our program is a huge positive for many reasons. He dominated in our Pre-Draft Camp and proved that he could just flat out play the game”, said Head Coach Aaron Hernandez.
Daniels wanted to express his gratitude, “I would like to give a big thanks to all of my previous coaches for pushing me and helping me get to where I am now. Also, I would like to give a very special thanks to both my mom and dad for pushing me and being honest with how I play.
Daniels will be attending the NAHL Odessa Jackalopes Main Camp this summer.
